The decade was coming to an end and Glasgow in the late 1960s wasn’t so much swinging as reeling. Enclaves of poverty, with multiple deprivation and shortened lifespans, dotted the city. Gang feuds and knifings, chibbings, were commonplace, particularly at weekends with their graffiti like “Tongs Ya Bass” splattered on walls.
