Cubs' Nico Hoerner to IL After Collision, Andrelton Simmons Returns

Hoerner to IL after umpire collision, Simmons activated originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago The Cubs got good injury news Sunday, but along with it came more bad news on that front. Nico Hoerner landed on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle sprain Sunday, an injury he sustained in a collision with umpire Dan Iassogna earlier this week. Hoerner’s IL placement is retroactive to Thursday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs activated Andrelton Simmons (right shoulder soreness) off the 10-day IL. Hoerner exited Thursday’s win over the Padres after colliding with Iassogna in shallow center field. He was lining up for a cutoff throw on a Jurickson Profar triple. He initially stayed in the game and took his first plate appearance, striking out in the second inning, before exiting. Hoerner hitting the IL is a blow for the Cubs as he’s one of a few bats they can rely on. He’s also handled majority of the work at shortstop this season, making Simmons’ return key. The Cubs signed Simmons after MLB’s lockout ended in March. He’s a four-time Gold Glove Award winner and was expected to give manager David Ross additional mix-and-match options with the infield. Simmons opened the season on the IL after only playing in one spring training game, in which he served as the DH. He spent the last few weeks building up in Arizona and with Triple-A Iowa, where he played six games on a rehab assignment (four at shortstop). The 32-year-old went 2-for-24 with a pair of walks with Iowa. Simmons went 2-for-24 with 7 K in 6 games with Iowa. Also had an error. Getting the playing time and how he felt was the most important thing for Simmons. Not the results. But there certainly appeared to be some hesitancy in his throws. https://t.co/CFWgfccHUv— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) May 15, 2022 Although Simmons is back, the Cubs have 13 players still on the injured list, a group that includes Hoerner, Marcus Stroman, David Robertson, Clint Frazier, Nick Madrigal, David Bote and Alec Mills.
